When photographs are passed down through generations of families, sometimes the stories of the people in the images become fragmented or lost. If you find yourself with a collection of photographs that lack contextual information, there are a number of clues you can look out for. The most effective way to date photographs is to combine historical analysis with knowledge of different photography techniques and materials through time. One of the most available, most misunderstood and certainly the most misidentified of all antiques are photographs. It would be difficult to find an antique dealer who has not at one time or another bought and sold 19th century photographs, yet, the average dealer would be hard pressed to correctly identify or date the different types of photographic images they routinely encounter. Let me share some tips with you to help date late 19th century and early 20th century photographs. If you have studio portraits in your family collection, certainly trying to identify the clothing and hairstyles can be helpful. These books can also help you with photographic images and processes that are older than what I’m discussing here.
If you have a photo that includes information about the photographer on the front or back of the picture, this information can help date it. This can help you date the photograph.

Dating old photographs can be difficult at times. Explore resources for dating cabinet cards, daguerreotypes and other old family photos. Relatives started cleaning out their closets and sending me the old family photographs! I received literal boxes of family photographs. Some arrived by email. Some photos arrived by snail mail. The challenge began when I realized a number of photographs were not labeled, and I had no idea who the individuals were.
I had to learn how to analyze those old family photos. The first step was to lean how to date those photographs. I had to determine how when a photograph was taken in order to be able to narrow down the possibilities of who the individuals were. Dating old photographs is a topic many of you are interested in based on the emails I receive.

Dating and identifying old family photographs is mainly a matter of using your brain in the same way in which you would work out a crossword puzzle or a jigsaw. Consider your family, work out possible links and hypotheses — ask the questions and try and work out the answers. One important factor is to consider which pictures go together. If they are all from the same old album as the ones used in this feature are then you can assume they belong together as a family.

Dating Old Photographs
In my blog about Victorian studio portraits, I mentioned various methods of dating old, unidentified family photographs, with special emphasis on analysing the fashion clues. By contrast, the appearance of our ancestors and relatives as they posed for the camera cannot be mistaken: their clothes and accessories were real and of their time, providing an accurate contemporary visual record.
The dress of the past as seen in photographs never lies, but recognising the garments, hats and hairstyles key to image dating requires a well-trained eye.
