The role of ultrasonography in obstetric practice has continuously evolved since its introduction more than 40 years ago. Indeed, it is difficult to imagine a modern obstetric practice without access to the information provided by real-time ultrasound. Using this imaging technique, clinicians can detect pregnancy as early as 3 weeks after conception, confirm or revise gestational age with reasonable accuracy, diagnose multiple gestation in early pregnancy, confidently diagnose fetal death at any gestational age, assess fetal well-being, evaluate amniotic fluid volume, and diagnose a broad variety of fetal malformations.
Advances in sonographic imaging in the past decade are attributable to both improved image resolution and to better clinical interpretation of ultrasound findings. It is reassuring that in human pregnancy no adverse bioeffects appear to be caused by diagnostic ultrasound. We also discuss three-dimensional 3D ultrasound, an exciting new method of imaging, which may lead to further advances in diagnostic obstetric imaging. Human pregnancy lasts an average of days from the first day of the last menstrual period in patients with regular day menstrual cycles.
Obstetric ultrasound, also known as prenatal or pregnancy ultrasound, uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of a developing embryo or fetus. Your doctor will use information from obstetric ultrasounds to track pregnancy progress, gestational age and help predict delivery dates. During an obstetric ultrasound, you will be on a bed, usually on your back.
You may be asked to change position during your scan. Changing position helps move your organs and the fetus into a better position so the sonographer can capture high-quality images. If you have an Alberta Health Care card or valid health care card from out of province, there is no cost for an obstetric ultrasound except in Quebec.

Diagnostic ultrasound examination is employed in a variety of specific circumstances during pregnancy, such as where there are concerns about fetal growth and after clinical complications. However, because adverse outcomes may also occur in pregnancies without clear risk factors, assumptions have been made that antenatal ultrasound examination in all pregnancies will prove beneficial by enabling earlier detection of problems that may not be apparent 3 — such as multiple pregnancies, IUGR, congenital anomalies, malpresentation and placenta praevia — and by allowing accurate gestational age estimation, leading to timely and appropriate management of pregnancy complications.
The ANC recommendations are intended to inform the development of relevant health-care policies and clinical protocols. These recommendations were developed in accordance with the methods described in the WHO handbook for guideline development 4. In summary, the process included: identification of priority questions and outcomes, retrieval of evidence, assessment and synthesis of the evidence, formulation of recommendations, and planning for the implementation, dissemination, impact evaluation and updating of the guideline.
Up-to-date systematic reviews were used to prepare evidence profiles for priority questions. To ensure that each recommendation is correctly understood and applied in practice, the context of all context-specific recommendations is clearly stated within each recommendation, and the contributing experts provided additional remarks where needed. In accordance with WHO guideline development standards, these recommendations will be reviewed and updated following the identification of new evidence, with major reviews and updates at least every five years.
For pregnant women P , does routine fetal ultrasound screening I in early pregnancy before 24 weeks of gestation or late pregnancy after 24 weeks of gestation compared with standard ANC C improve maternal and perinatal outcomes O? The intervention in all trials involved an ultrasound scan before 24 weeks of gestation, with women in the control arm undergoing selective scans if indicated or, in one study, concealed scans, the results of which were not shared with clinicians unless requested.
The scans usually included assessment of gestational age biparietal diameter with or without head circumference and femur length , fetal anatomy, number of fetuses and location of the placenta.
Obstetric ultrasounds are performed in the 1 st trimester for a variety of reasons, including confirmation of the pregnancy and the number of babies, assessment of bleeding, determining the gestational age and well being. You will be required to drink ml of water one hour prior to your examination. This allows the bladder to fill and helps to visualize the uterus, baby and other structures of the pelvis. Hence, do not go to the toilet once you have commenced drinking the water.
If you feel as though you may struggle to hold onto the water, you can come to Sound Radiology prior to your scan to drink the water here. When you arrive for your scan you will be asked to fill out a form about when your last menstrual cycle took place if known and some other details relevant to the scan. You will be asked to lie on the table and to expose your tummy and a towel will be tucked into your pants to limit spread of the gel onto your clothes. It can just be a bit sticky! Clear gel is applied to your tummy and the sonographer moves the probe over your tummy recording images. Usually a vaginal scan is also performed. This gives us a much better picture of your developing baby. You will be able to see for yourself on our plasma screen monitors! After emptying your bladder and wearing a gown you will lie on the bed and a special probe is positioned in your vagina.
